When it comes to fireplaces, I prefer the type that considers the entire layout and decor of the room. Some of the newer homes in our area seem to place a small fireplace on an expansive wall, which ends up looking awkward and limits where you can place sofas and chairs. White Built-Ins Around The Fireplace: Before And After
The white recessed around the fireplace has been installed and you guys I can't even. Simple and clean lines. The "original" fireplace wood was not very detailed, but it was definitely more ornate and sophisticated than the Craftsman style doors we have now. So I decided that while we were working on the insets, I would have the carpenter replace some of the fireplace woodwork as well to reflect the same simplicity of our doors (and inset cabinet doors). It was no problem at all. Plaster moldings meant they couldn't be replicated on these built-ins, which made me unsure what to expect. Once the crown molding is painted, you'll probably never notice that it's not the same crown molding (hell, not even the same material!). Also, buying two large units to fit out this space would have cost us some money (definitely not $3,500), but it makes us feel less guilty about the high price tag. The cabinetsThe depth of the walls on either side of the fireplace is not very deep, so the built-in shelves and cabinets are only 12″ deep (and 14″ tall). Ceiling height = 8 feet
Cabinets = Standard prefabricated kitchen cabinets (36 inches wide and 34.5 inches high)
Shelf depth = 12 inches
Mantel = 80 inches (it's 4 feet off the ground)
Firebox (including tile) = 5 feet wide and 52″ high
